Andy Warhol (1928-1987)
Over the past decade I have curated and published a number of works on Andy Warhol. My recent exhibition Andy Warhol: The Last Decade (2009-2010) completed a national tour accompanied by a catalogue published by Prestel. Forthcoming, I have a monograph on Warhol appearing in 2011 as part of Phaidon's new Focus series, and an exhibition and catalogue titled Image Machine: Andy Warhol and Photography (2012).
Zero and Postwar European Art
Conducting research and writing towards a publication on the German Gruppe Zero (Heinz Mack, Otto Piene, and Günther Uecker) and their formative role in the transformation of art in post-World War II Europe. Recently, I have published an essay for Heinz Mack's exhibition at Sperone Westwater Gallery, New York (2011), and assisted Otto Piene on the recreation of a slide projection performance of Proliferation of the Sun and a Sky Art event (2010-2011).
Alexander Dorner (1893-1957)
Collaborating with Peter Frumkin, director, and Ines Katenhusen, Universität Hannover, on a documentary film on the expatriate German museum director Alexander Dorner, who, as director of the Landesmuseum, Hannover, developed an active program of modern art and transformed museum display techniques. He ardently advocated the cause of modern art during the National Socialist period.
Robert S. Duncanson (1821-1872)
My publication The Emergence of the African American Artist: Robert S. Duncanson (University of Missouri, 1993) and the exhibition that toured the United States (1995-96) are the definitive works on this ante bellum era African American landscape painter. I maintain a comprehensive database on all the works known to have been painted by this artist. Currently, I have curated a Duncanson exhibition at the Thomas Cole National Historic Site, Catskill, NY. And, I have written an article for Antiques (November 2011) on the antebellum Cincinnati African American art community.
Carl F. Wimar (1828-1862)
A Düsseldorf Kunstakademie trained artist, Wimar became one of the last artist-explorers to depict the plains Indians prior to the mass settlement after the Civil War. My 1991 exhibition and accompanying publication (Abrams) are the principal resources on the artist. I maintain a database of all known works created by this German-American artist in his brief career.
